How To Add Custom iOS App Icons

In iOS 14, some users are opting to use the Shortcuts app to add custom iOS app icons to their home screen, continuing the growing trend of customizing your home screen.

You can freely alter the appearance of your home screen by replacing the default app icons with images of your choice. You will need to find or create an image for your new app icon on your home screen before following this guide. There are many different looks that you can download online.

The procedure for adding a custom icon to the Home screen for any app of your choosing is outlined in the steps that follow. In essence, the procedure involves adding an image to a Shortcut on the Home screen to open an application.

Because it lets users create multi-step processes to run on their device, shortcuts can be a complicated app to use, but in this case, the shortcut only has one basic component.

  1. Launch the Shortcuts app on your iPhone or iPad

  2. Tap the + icon in the top-right corner of the screen

  3. Tap Add Action

  4. Use the text field to search for Open App

  6. Tap Choose

  7. Use the search for the app you want to change the icon of, and select it

    Select the app you wish to change the icon of and open when it’s clicked on your Home screen.

    From the drop-down menu, select Take PhotoChoose Photo, or Choose File, depending on where your replacement app icon image is located and select the icon you wish to use.

  11. Rename the app as you want it to appear on the home screen then tap Add

  13. Return to the home screen

    If you already had the app on your home screen, you will now have two icons. In order to keep only your newly-created icon, simply move the old icon to the App Library. You must not delete the original app or the newly created Shortcut.
