Troubleshoot Windows Activation Errors

Try these troubleshooting steps to understand what is causing and resolve common Windows activation errors.

  1. (0xC004C008) error code

Go to our contact page, select the ‘Activation – Problem using key‘ subject, in the message let us know you’re getting error code 0xC004C008.

  2. (0xC004F050) error code

This error code means the key you’re using doesn’t match the installed edition of Windows (e.g., using a Home key on a Pro install).

The top of the activation Window will state your current edition (e.g., ‘Windows 11 Home’ or ‘Windows 11 Pro N’).
To check your current edition: Select Start > select Settings > select System > select Activation.

If the installed edition does not match the key you’re using, you will receive the 0xC004F050 error code.
Important to remember OEM keys do not support upgrades under the OEM license terms, you cannot use a Pro OEM key to upgrade from Home to Pro.

    Solutions:
    1. Perform a fresh Windows install, activation guides below:
    Windows 10 Activation Guide
    Windows 11 Activation Guide

    2. Purchase a product key that matches your installed edition, (you can then return the unused one for a refund via our contact page).

  3. Activation troubleshooter

Use the Windows Activation Troubleshooter to check for corrupted or missing updates or components.

Select Start  > select Settings  > select System  > select Activation > select Troubleshoot.

  4. Windows update

Windows will sometimes refuse to activate if an update is outstanding or missing. Check and make sure any updates are installed.

Select Start  > select Settings  > select Windows Update > select Check for updates.

  5. Restart your PC

It’s amazing how many things a quick restart fixes.

Select Start > select Power > select Restart > retry activation.
