How to install Windows 10

This full guide goes through each step of installing Windows 10 using the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool provided by Microsoft.

  1. Media Creation Tool

    Go to the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool page

  2. Click the Download tool now button.

  3. Double-click the MediaCreationToolxxxx.exe file that was downloaded to your computer to launch the tool.

  4. Click the Accept button to agree to the Microsoft terms.

  5. Select the Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) for another PC.

  6. Click the Next button.


  7. Uncheck the Use the recommended options for this PC option if you need to change something in the next step.

  8. Select the correct language, architecture, and edition of Windows 10.

  9. Select the correct language, architecture, and edition of Windows 10.

  10. Click the Next button.

  11. Select the USB flash drive option if you want to create a bootable USB to install Windows 10 on a computer without an OS. Or select ISO file to download the setup file which you can run and install Windows 10 directly on the computer you are using.

  12. Click the Next button.

  13. Select a flash drive from the list to create a bootable USB. Or if downloading the ISO file, choose where you want the file to download to and click Save.

  14. Click the Next button.

  15. Click the Finish button.

  16. Windows 10 Installation

    Start the computer with the Windows 10 USB flash drive inserted. Or run the downloaded ISO file.

  17. On prompt, press any key to boot from the USB drive.

  18. On the “Windows Setup,” click the Next button.

  19. Click the Install now button.

  20. Enter the product key if you have one.

  21. Click the Next button.

  22. Select the edition of Windows 10.

  23. Click the Next button.

  24. Select the I accept the license terms option to continue.

  25. Click the Next button.

  26. Click on the Custom: Install Windows only (Advanced) option.

  27. Select the partition with the current installation (usually “Drive 0”), and click the Delete button. Quick tip: If “Drive 0” has multiple partitions, you have to select and delete each of the partitions to allow the setup to use the entire drive for the new clean installation. Windows 10 will create the required partitions automatically during the process. It’s not necessary to delete the partitions on secondary drives.

  28. Click the Yes button.

  29. Select the empty drive (Drive 0 Unallocated Space).

  30. Click the Next button.

    Select your Region.

  32. Click the Yes button.

  33. Select your keyboard layout.

  34. Click the Yes button.

  35. Click the Skip button (unless you need to add a second keyboard layout).

  36. Click the Set up for personal use option.


  37. Click the Next button.

  38. Type your Microsoft account information to create an account or sign in to your existing account.

  39. Click the Next button.

  40. Type your Microsoft account password. Or if you use your phone to sign in to Microsoft services, you can click the Use the Microsoft Authenticator app instead option.

  41. Click the Next button.

  42. Click the Create PIN button.

  43. Create your new four-digit Windows Hello PIN. Quick tip: If you want to continue using a traditional password, click the Cancel button to skip the process.

  44. (Optional) If you wish to enable Timeline to access your activity history across devices, click the Yes button. Otherwise, click the No button.

  45. (Optional) You can supply your phone number and then click the Send button to link your phone with your computer. If you want to skip this option, click the Do it later button in the bottom-left corner of the screen.

  46. (Optional) Click the Next button to allow OneDrive to backup the Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders to the cloud. If you use another cloud service, or you’re not interested in uploading your files to the cloud, click the Only save files to this PC option in the bottom-left corner of the screen.

  47. Click the No button to skip the Office setup (if applicable). Quick tip: If you have an Office product key, you can click the I have a product key option, and then the apps will install automatically on your device.

  48. (Optional) Check the Let Cortana respond to “Hey Cortana” option to use the assistance hands-free.

  49. Click the Accept button to allow Microsoft to collect personal information to make Cortana more personal. If you’re not interested in this feature, click the Decline button to continue.

  51. Select your privacy settings (and don’t forget to scroll down the page to review all the available settings).

  52. Click the Accept button.

Troubleshooting Windows Activation Errors:

Windows can present an error during activation for a wide range of reasons, we recommend running through the general troubleshooting steps below in order. They resolve the large majority of errors quickly and easily.

  1. Make sure your device is connected to the internet and that the system date and time is set correctly for your timezone.
  2. Check Windows Update for any outstanding updates, install and complete any outstanding updates so Windows is fully updated.
  3. Restart your computer and retry activation.
  4. Run the Windows Activation Troubleshooter on the Activation page.
  5. Use the toll-free automated phone activation service by clicking Activate by Phone on the Activation page. If you do not see this option, you can load it by typing into the Windows Search Bar SLUI 4, hit enter and it will first ask for your country/region, then follow the on-screen instructions.
