Personalized 3D Avatar with Loomie
As online classrooms continue to evolve, educators face distinct challenges—particularly the lack of face-to-face interaction and reduced non-verbal communication.
To address these issues in her online communication course, Dr. Claire Sherman introduces a creative solution: the Loomie avatar.
This guide walks students through creating their own personalized 3D avatars with Loomie to boost engagement and connection in class.
Why 3D Avatars Matter
Online learning often misses the warmth and immediacy of in-person interaction. Dr. Sherman identifies two key obstacles:
- Absence of Visual Interaction – Without seeing students’ faces, it’s harder for instructors to connect, gauge needs, and remember individual participants.
- Limited Non-Verbal Cues – Text-based chats strip away tone, facial expressions, and body language—critical elements for meaningful communication.
The Loomie Solution
Loomie is a customizable 3D avatar that integrates with Zoom, enabling students to appear as a virtual version of themselves during class.
This helps bridge the gap between the digital and real-world classroom, making sessions more engaging and personal.
How to Create Your Loomie 3D Avatar
Loomie 3D avatars add personality, engagement, and a touch of fun to online learning, making it easier for instructors and students to connect.
By following these steps, you’ll be ready to debut your Loomie in class—turning digital sessions into a more lively and human experience.
-
Set Up a Google Account
If you don’t already have one, create a Google account—Loomie requires Google credentials for login.
Most students already have personal accounts, but if not, sign up before continuing. -
Download the Loomie App (Mobile)
On your iOS or Android device, search for “Loomie” in the app store and install it.
Important: Sign in with your Google account—not your email—so it integrates smoothly with your computer later. -
Customize Your Avatar
Open the Loomie app and design your avatar. Adjust hair, facial features, clothing, and accessories to reflect your personality.
This will serve as your virtual identity during class sessions. -
Install Loomie Live (Desktop)
Visit Loomie.ai and download Loomie Live for MacOS or Windows.
Open Loomie Live and link it to your Google account by clicking the plus icon.
Your mobile avatar will automatically sync, and updates will appear instantly. -
Use Loomie Live in Zoom
Before class, open Zoom and switch your camera to Loomie Live in the video settings.
Your avatar will now appear on-screen in place of your live video feed.
Troubleshooting
- Always log into both the mobile and desktop versions of Loomie with the same Google account to ensure proper syncing.
- If you run into problems—such as download errors or Google account connection issues, contact Loomie for help.
